Charles E. Kelly Facility Re-Use Plan
The first of many meetings between the KCLRA and the public took place recently at the Collier Township Building. A presentation about the topography and options for the nearly 120 acre Charles E. Kelly Support Facility site were presented.

The public had several questions about land use and what could be the outcome for the Defense Department. The giant “golf ball” on the hill will be staying as it is used for radar by the airport.

As many may know, the Charles E. Kelly Support Facility has been scheduled for closure by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC). Under the guidance of the recently formed Kelly Center Local Redevelopment Authority (KCLRA), a public planning process has been undertaken for the potential redevelopment of three properties in Neville and Collier Townships, Allegheny County.

The Re-Use Plan will serve as a general policy guide for potential reuses for the Facility’s holding in Collier and Neville Townships. The public is invited to meet with the Planning Team for an overview of the planning process, background information about the site, and existing conditions. Public participation will be instrumental in developing the Re-use Plan.

Be sure to check back for the next meeting. To offer your input on the Re-use Plan, for additional information, meeting directions, or to request special assistance, please log on to www.kclra.com or call 412-261-6000.

Household Chemical Collection
Take a quick look around your house and you may discover as much as 100 pounds of common household chemicals referred to as “household hazardous waste” (HHW) stored in your basement, garage, kitchen, bathroom and garden shed.

Surprised? Don’t be — you’re not alone. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an average home can easily accumulate this amount of cleaners, pesticides, paints, automotive fluids and other products containing potentially hazardous ingredients. Pennsylvania residents will have an opportunity to safely and cost effectively dispose of HHW products at an upcoming collection sponsored by the Southwestern PA Household Hazardous Waste Task Force, UPMC and other private and public sector partners.

The next collection will take place on April 26, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Settler’s Cabin Park wave pool parking lot in Allegheny County. Individuals dropping off waste material will pay a fee of $2 per gallon. Payment in cash only (no checks or credit cards accepted).

The collection event will accept the following materials: aerosol cans; automotive fluids (motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, brake fluid); batteries; chemistry sets; compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs); gasoline and kerosene; household cleaners (ammonia, drain openers, acid cleaners, oven cleaners); mercury; paint products (latex, oil based, alkyd based, arts/crafts chemicals, rust preservatives, creosote, water sealers, paint thinners, furniture strippers); pesticides/herbicides (rodent killers, insecticides, weed killers, mothballs, fertilizer); photo chemicals; and pool chemicals.

The following materials will not be accepted at the collection: ammunition; appliances; bulk waste; commercial and industrial waste; compressed gas cylinders (including propane tanks); drugs; explosives; flares; fluorescent tubes; leaking containers; medical waste (including needles); PCBs and dioxin; radioactive materials (including smoke detectors); and tires.

For more information concerning the complete 2008 schedule of collections, visit www.swpahhw.org or call the Pennsylvania Resources Council at 412-488-7452.

Volunteer at a Collection!
Each collection event requires a large number of volunteers to direct traffic, conduct surveys, distribute educational materials, serve refreshments and perform many other important tasks.

Choose to volunteer for an entire day or for a four-hour shift. For more information, call the Pennsylvania Resources Council at 412-488-7452.

Second Annual “Hall of Flame” Golf Outing
The Collier Township Volunteer Firefighters are now accepting reservations for the second annual Hall of Flame Golf Outing to be held on July 7 at the Club at Nevillewood.

The outing returns as a “not to be missed” community event providing the opportunity to golf with local heroes and enjoy Collier’s renowned course.

Last year’s event contributed $30,000 in proceeds directly towards equipment to protect the life and property of our residents and businesses. Learn how you can join in the effort through various levels of corporate or small business sponsorship, entering a foursome or even joining us for dinner to see who participated in the ‘Hall of Flame.”
