Artist-in-Residency Program
Ends with Recital
Now in its 3rd year, the
Artist-in-Residency program
at the Chartiers Valley
Primary School consists of
professionals from the fine arts
community providing 25 days of
basic instruction in their field of
expertise to kindergarten students.
The primary reason for the residency
is to integrate Language Arts curriculum
with art curriculum. The arts can enhance,
strengthen, and help to teach content and skills
from other subject areas. (Recent research on
differentiated instruction and multiple intelligences
seem to support this belief.)
The artists worked together with the teachers to
integrate art with specific Language Arts curriculum. The artists
incorporated story telling, rhythm, rhyme, beginning sounds,
segmenting words, blending words, and vocabulary building
throughout their arts lessons. The artists had a complete list of
literature and targeted comprehension and phonological awareness
skills prior to the residencies. Pre- and post- testing was done on
the Language Arts
curricular goals to
document the basic
belief that the arts
can impact learning.
The results will
be compared
anonymously from
student to student
and class to class.
PS art teacher
Jennifer Fazzone coordinates and monitors
the program. This year,
student instruction focused
on dance and movement,
music and tempo, and the
visual art of puppet-making.
This year's artists included:
Patty Maloney-an experienced
dancer who believes that movement is
an extension on one’s creative and
intellectual self. She guides students to
become problem solvers and reflect upon
their work.
Jeff Berman-dulcimer player/percussionist. Jeff’s
goal is for students to develop a melodic/harmonic
and rhythmic sensibility for experiencing their own
creativity, whether they are an emerging player or a more
experienced performer. He has collaborated with artists from all over
the world, sharing different music traditions that often incorporate
improvisation as a key component in the creative process.
Cheryl Capezzuti-puppet maker/puppeteer. Through the
creation of puppets, Cheryl introduces students to an imaginary
world well beyond
their regular
classroom
experience.
Cheryl will be
creating bug puppets
with the
Kindergarten
students inspired
by the stories
they are reading
now in class.
