MS Rekindles Recycling Program
As a science teacher, Tracy
Nardina has a keen interest in
the environment. When she
noticed that the recycling bins
at the back of the music
building parking lot (left over
from a high school student’s
senior project) were not being
utilized, she decided to do
something about it. With the
help of students in her 10th
period study hall and the
cooperation of Middle School
faculty and staff, Ms. Nardina
jumpstarted a recycling
initiative. Eighth grade students
Anna Christner, Cody
Hartman, Brian Fontanesi,
Chris Azzaretto, Nico DeMaio,
and Bryan Calabro are responsible
for the collection of recyclable
paper. At the beginning of
10th period every Monday,
Tuesday, and Wednesday, the
students make their scheduled
rounds to classrooms to gather
paper that has been designated
for recycling. While the district
generates a small amount of
income from the recycling
company Abitibi, the greatest
benefit is to the environment.
Residents are welcome
to drop their recyclable paper
in the bins outside of regular
school hours.
“Who Knows? Ask Hoo!”
The Intermediate School has introduced the “Who Knows? Ask
Hoo!” column on the school's website to help improve student
achievement by addressing topics such as homework tips, study
habits, time management, and communications. Parents and
students are invited to click on the Hoo logo (see owl below) on
the IS home page and e-mail questions to the Hoo Colt Team.
Responses will be posted
on the Hoo page and
appear in the Chatterbox
newsletter. The page will
also include helpful
feature articles and links
to educational resources.
